We visited Monte Carlo while sailing on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and this stop instantly became one of my favorites of the entire cruise. Monte Carlo is a place you think you know from movies and photos, but nothing compares to experiencing it in person. It is glamorous, pristine, historic, and full of energy. It truly feels like a city built on luxury and beauty.
If you are visiting for just one day, especially from a cruise, this guide will help you make the most of your time. There is so much to see here and having a plan makes all the difference.
Why Monte Carlo Feels So Special
From the moment we stepped off the yacht, I felt like I had walked onto a movie set. Everything is polished and picture perfect. The streets look freshly washed. The buildings are elegant. The balconies are filled with flowers. There is a strong police presence, which actually adds to the feeling of safety and exclusivity. It is busy but in a polished way. You instantly sense that you are in a place that values beauty, design, and luxury above all else.

For our visit, we booked a private driver and guide. It was one hundred percent worth it. We booked four hours but quickly realized that eight would have allowed us to see and enjoy everything without rushing. If you are coming here for the first time, especially on a day stop, get a driver. It changes the entire experience.
Starting Your Day at the Monte Carlo Casino
We began our day at one of the most iconic buildings in Europe. The Monte Carlo Casino is not just a landmark. It is an experience. I cannot overstate how beautiful it is inside. The Belle Époque architecture is ornate and incredibly detailed. There are gold accents, hand painted ceilings, gleaming marble, and the kind of old world elegance you simply cannot recreate today. It feels historic and grand but still very much alive.
The casino opens at 10:00 a.m. for visitors and even if you do not plan to gamble, it is absolutely worth walking through. If you want to enter, make sure you bring your passport. During the morning visitor hours from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the last entry at 12:15 p.m., adults can enter for around €17. This includes an audio guided visit of the public areas and the stunning architecture.
If you want to access the gaming rooms, they open at 2:00 p.m. Entry for this is €20 per adult and it includes a small “Casino Royal” offer which is typically a voucher to use inside. You can simply walk through the gaming rooms or stay and play. Tables and slot machines begin operating at 2:00 p.m.

Step outside the casino and you are in Casino Square which is the postcard view most people associate with Monaco. You will see luxury cars everywhere. There are terraces overlooking the square, immaculate gardens, and some of the most photographed buildings in the country.
Where to Stay in Monte Carlo
If you ever spend the night here, staying in the City Center puts you right in the middle of everything. The Hotel de Paris is the star of the area. It is historic, luxurious, and steps away from the casino. Even if you are not staying overnight, walk inside the lobby. It is stunning. You can also enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants on the property. It is a beautiful spot and the perfect place to take a break later in the day.

Just outside Monte Carlo, about 20 minutes away, is the Maybourne Riviera. This hotel is perched high above the coastline with panoramic views of Monte Carlo, the cliffs, and the Mediterranean. The restaurant has balcony seating that makes you feel like you are floating over the city. If you have a driver, this is a wonderful spot for lunch.

Exploring Monte Carlo with a Driver
Having a driver allowed us to see parts of Monaco that many visitors miss. After the casino, we headed up to Old Town. This area feels like a different side of Monaco. It is historic, quiet, and incredibly charming. It sits high above the main port and gives you stunning views in every direction.
Walk through Le Rocher, the old village area. It feels like stepping back in time. The narrow streets, pastel buildings, and quiet courtyards give Monte Carlo a softer and more romantic side that you would never see if you stayed only in the main luxury district.

Here is where you will find the Prince’s Palace. The courtyard is beautiful and the views over the marina are some of the best in the principality. If your timing is right, try to see the Changing of the Guard at 11:55 a.m. It is a short ceremony, but it adds a nice historical moment to your visit.
Just a short walk away is the Monaco Cathedral. This is the final resting place of Princess Grace and it is a peaceful and beautiful stop.

A Must Visit Day Trip from Monte Carlo: Menton
After exploring Old Town, our driver took us to Menton, a town in France overlooking the French Riviera. We would not have been able to visit without transportation, so this is another reason why having a driver is essential if you want to fully experience this region.
Menton is often called the pearl of the Riviera and it is easy to see why. It is softer, more colorful, and more romantic than Monte Carlo. Everything is about lemons here. You will see lemon themed shops, lemon décor, and lemon infused products everywhere. The town is also known for olive oil and local foods.
The seaside location is gorgeous. There are pastel buildings, palm trees, cobblestone streets, and endless cafes and boutiques. The rhythm here is slower and more relaxed. Think peaceful morning strolls, quiet coves with clear blue water, and long lunches overlooking the harbor. It feels sun soaked and charming in a way that is very different from Monte Carlo.
If you have the time and the transportation, Menton should absolutely be part of your day.

Lunch on the Yacht and More Exploring
After Menton, we headed back to the yacht for lunch. One of the things I loved about The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection was how effortless it felt to come and go throughout the day. We had a beautiful lunch, enjoyed the views, and then set out again for more exploring and shopping.
Monte Carlo is a luxury shopping paradise. There are boutiques on every corner and the overall experience feels elevated. Even if you are not planning on buying anything, it is fun to walk through the shops and people watch.

Walking the Port Hercules Marina
One of the most memorable parts of the afternoon was walking along Port Hercules. This marina is filled with some of the most impressive yachts you will ever see. They line the harbor from end to end. Even without a driver, this area is very walkable and enjoyable. It feels like a celebration of luxury and lifestyle and it gives you a beautiful perspective of the city.

Final Thoughts
Monte Carlo is one of those destinations that stays with you long after you leave. It is polished, luxurious, historic, and visually stunning. There is an energy here that feels exciting and elegant at the same time. Visiting as part of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection made the experience even more special. Having a driver and a guide allowed us to see so much in a single day, if we didn’t have a guide we would have not be able to do everything either.
If you are planning a visit, especially from a cruise, give yourself as much time as possible. Six to eight hours is ideal, as there is so much to see and do, and everything feels elevated and memorable. I did not get to experience everything because of time constraints. Next time, I would skip Port Hercules to allow more time for Old Town, Menton, and other highlights.
Monte Carlo is not just a destination. It is an experience. It is a feeling. And it is one of the most glamorous places in the world.
