If you’ve ever dreamed of cruising down the California coast, the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) from San Francisco to Big Sur is the ultimate bucket list adventure. We made the trip even more unforgettable by renting a convertible, allowing us to fully embrace the stunning scenery along the way. These Pacific Coast Highway road trip tips will help you make the most of this iconic journey.
Here’s my guide to making the most of this epic road trip:
Where I Stayed
- The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco
- Meadowood, Napa Valley
- The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay
- La Playa Hotel, Carmel-by-the-Sea
- The Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur
Timing is Everything
The coastal fog tends to hang around until about 1 pm, so I recommend leaving after 1 pm to fully enjoy the gorgeous Pacific coastline. If the fog clears, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views!
My Route Suggestion
While I absolutely loved Napa Valley and Meadowood, there is so much to do there that I wish I could’ve spent more time exploring. That’s the only reason I’d skip Napa Valley next time. If I could do it again, I’d head straight from San Francisco to Half Moon Bay, then Carmel-by-the-Sea, and finally Big Sur. This route offers stunning coastal vistas and an unforgettable experience.

Must-See Stops
- Bixby Creek Bridge: One of the most iconic and photographed spots along the PCH. The views from this historic bridge are absolutely breathtaking.

- Nepenthe: Drive past Post Ranch Inn to reach Nepenthe, a must-visit for its amazing restaurant and charming gift shop.
- Monterey Bay: A stunning stop for its vibrant coastal views, marine life, and scenic beauty.

- 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach: While in Carmel, take a scenic detour along the 17-mile drive, where you’ll see the iconic Pebble Beach Lodge, The Inn at Spanish Bay, dramatic cliffs, mystical forests, and world-famous golf courses.
State Park Stops:
- Andrew Molera State Park: Perfect for nature lovers, this park offers hiking trails, beaches, and breathtaking views of the rugged coastline. It’s a more relaxed stop in Big Sur, with plenty of photo ops.
- Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park: Known for its towering redwoods, this park offers incredible hiking trails, such as the famous McWay Falls trail, leading to a stunning waterfall that cascades into the Pacific.
