If you are planning a trip to San Antonio and looking for a luxury hotel that truly delivers on service, location, and atmosphere, this review of Mokara Hotel & Spa will help you decide if it is the right fit. After staying here for two nights, I can confidently say this hotel exceeded my expectations and stands out as the best place to stay on the San Antonio River Walk.
Best Time to Visit San Antonio
I visited San Antonio in November and happened to arrive during a cold spell. While the weather was cooler than expected, the city was still enjoyable. Typically, the best times to visit are:
• March through May with temperatures around 70 to 85 degrees
• October through November with similarly mild and comfortable weather
San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is easy to navigate, and Mokara Hotel & Spa is only a 15 to 20 minute Uber ride from the airport.
Why I Chose Mokara Hotel & Spa
When researching hotels for this trip, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted. I wanted to stay directly on the River Walk so I could walk out the door to restaurants, shops, and the river itself. A balcony was also a must for me.
My final two choices came down to Hotel Emma and Mokara Hotel & Spa. While Hotel Emma is beautiful, it does not offer balconies or River Walk access. Mokara is located directly on the River Walk and offers balcony rooms, which ultimately made my decision easy.
I often base my hotel decisions on my conversations with the concierge or front desk. Those early interactions say a lot about the service level you can expect. After several conversations with Mokara’s concierge, my expectations were high going into the stay.
Arrival and Check-In Experience
From the moment we pulled up, the experience felt seamless. A bellman greeted us immediately, there were no long lines at check-in, and our room was ready when we arrived around 2:00 pm.
The check-in process was smooth and efficient, which set the tone for the rest of our stay.

The ambience of Mokara Hotel & Spa is best described as quiet, refined, and boutique luxury. The hotel sits on a calmer stretch of the River Walk, which makes a noticeable difference compared to busier areas.
After staying in over 100 five-star properties, I have come to appreciate intimate boutique hotels more than large resorts. Mokara fits that preference perfectly, with just under 100 rooms.
The location creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere, especially in the evenings when the lights along the river reflect off the water.
River Walk Spa Terrace Room Review
For this stay, we booked a River Walk Spa Terrace room, and it was exactly what I was looking for. The room felt luxurious and was positioned at the perfect height, allowing us to sit on the balcony and enjoy the River Walk below.
You step out of the hotel and are immediately surrounded by dining, shopping, history, and beautiful scenery, making it incredibly easy to explore the city.
If you are planning to use the spa during your stay, this hotel is ideal. Our room was directly across from the spa entrance, making it easy to walk back in a robe. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the bathroom amenities were top tier.

River Views Suite Upgrade Experience at Mokara Hotel & Spa
During our stay, the Mokara team surprised my son with an upgrade to an incredible suite, which truly elevated the experience. The suite was spacious, beautifully designed, and felt like a true luxury retreat, especially for a short two-night stay.
We were in San Antonio on our way to a hunting trip, and my boys met us at the hotel during our stay. It also happened to be my son’s birthday, and the staff went above and beyond to make the occasion special. Chocolate cake and champagne were waiting in the suite, turning the upgrade into a meaningful celebration rather than just a room change.
The level of care and attention shown by the staff in making my son’s stay special truly stood out and perfectly reflects the service Mokara Hotel & Spa is known for.

Service and Staff Experience
The service at Mokara Hotel & Spa truly stood out. From the bellman to the concierge, front desk, and spa team, everyone was warm, attentive, and genuinely focused on making our stay special.
The staff goes beyond being polite. They are thoughtful, caring, and proactive, which makes a huge difference in the overall experience.
Dining at Mokara Hotel & Spa
Mokara has one restaurant on the property called Ostra. It is the hotel’s signature seafood restaurant, known for upscale coastal cuisine and a refined, elegant atmosphere. Ostra is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
While we did not dine there during this stay, it is a popular option for guests looking for an elevated dining experience without leaving the hotel.
Rooftop Pool and Bar Experience
The hotel features a seasonal rooftop pool and bar that feels like a hidden retreat. Attendants serve cocktails, wine, and light fare directly to your chair.
The setting is intimate and peaceful, with soft lounge seating. It feels more like a private adults-only escape than a party atmosphere, which I really appreciated.

Things to Do Near Mokara Hotel & Spa
One of the biggest advantages of staying at Mokara is the walkable location. Many of San Antonio’s top attractions are close by.
Within a 5 to 10 Minute Walk
• The Alamo, San Antonio’s most famous historic site
• La Villita Historic Arts Village, a charming collection of galleries, boutiques, and artisan shops along the river
• San Fernando Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States, known for its architecture and evening light shows
Within a 10 to 20 Minute Walk
• Tower of the Americas, featuring an observation deck and rotating restaurant with panoramic views, located in Hemisfair Park
River Walk Cruise
One of the best ways to experience the River Walk is from the water, and a San Antonio River Walk cruise is something I highly recommend during your stay. Seeing the city from the river gives you a completely different perspective and helps you better understand the history and layout of the area.
The boats travel through the most scenic sections of the River Walk, passing under stone bridges, alongside restaurants, hotels, and historic buildings. It is a relaxing way to take in the atmosphere, especially if you have limited time or want a break from walking.
Tip: For a River Walk cruise, book with Go Rio Cruises. They offer private tours that must be reserved at least two weeks in advance. Your concierge can assist with booking, or you can call 210-227-4746 directly.

Overall Review of Mokara Hotel & Spa
Every part of this stay exceeded my expectations. The team, service, location, boutique luxury style, atmosphere, and amenities all stood out.
At this stage in my life, it is not easy to exceed my expectations, but Mokara Hotel & Spa absolutely did. I would confidently say this is the best place to stay in San Antonio. It is a must, and it honestly could not be better.
