Nestled atop the cliffs of Big Sur, Post Ranch Inn offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Known for its breathtaking views, romantic atmosphere, and serene surroundings, this resort promises an escape like no other. My visit revealed a mix of captivating highlights and understated luxuries. This Post Ranch Inn Big Sur Review dives into my personal journey, covering dining, accommodations, service, and unforgettable moments.
Let the fog enchant you – September’s 62-degree chill and misty mornings set the tone for a magical Big Sur getaway.
Natural luxury meets rustic charm – Post Ranch Inn blends a love for nature with high-end touches, creating a perfect romantic hideaway.
Arrival and First Impressions
After years of dreaming about this stay, the moment finally came. The entrance to Post Ranch Inn is subtle, marked by an understated sign and a guard gate. The lack of a grand entrance initially surprised me. The drive through towering cedar trees with mountains in the background was scenic but unremarkable for a property of this caliber. However, as I approached the reception area, the warmth began to set the tone for the rest of my stay.

A roaring fire and friendly staff greeted us, making up for the understated arrival. While our room wasn’t ready, we began our stay with a couples massage that immediately set the tone for relaxation.

Ocean Views and Room Experience
Our room, a Pacific Suite, delivered on every dream I’d had for the last 15 years. Perched atop a cliff, the view of the Pacific Ocean was breathtaking. The suite itself was magical, featuring a fireplace, hot tub, and sliding glass doors that opened directly to the ocean and cliffs below.
The thoughtful touches truly stood out—two bottles of wine awaited us for my birthday, along with all-you-can-eat snacks and a beverage cart refilled daily with glass water bottles, craft beers, and specialty drinks.
The only downside? Fog often obscured the view, a common occurrence in Big Sur. Thankfully, one of our three days was clear, revealing the full splendor of the landscape.

Dining and Activities
Sierra Mar Restaurant
The resort’s sole dining option, Sierra Mar, boasts incredible views and a menu as stunning as its surroundings. Breakfast is complimentary, with unlimited options. We chose room service each morning—a small $10 delivery fee was well worth enjoying breakfast in bed with an ocean view.

Nepenthe
Venturing out, we discovered Nepenthe, a nearby cliffside restaurant offering California fare with breathtaking ocean views. The terrace provided an unforgettable dining experience, while the adjoining gift shop was perfect for unique and thoughtfully curated souvenirs.

Resort Activities
We explored the resort’s gardens, outdoor pool, gym, and mercantile gift shop during our stay. However, the real magic was in staying in the room, soaking in the hot tub, or sitting by the fire with the ocean as our backdrop..

Stay in or venture out – The magic of Post Ranch Inn lies in the perfect balance of serene relaxation and nearby explorations.

Challenges and Observations
- Foggy Views: Big Sur’s famous fog often obscures the stunning ocean views. It tends to clear by 1 PM if it lifts at all.
- Rustic Focus: While luxurious, the furnishings and decor lean rustic and could benefit from updates to match the resort’s price point.
- No TV: A perfect choice for romance, but only if you cherish uninterrupted time with your partner.
Final Thoughts
Post Ranch Inn is a once-in-a-lifetime destination for romance, privacy, and serene luxury. While its rustic charm may not scream opulence, the natural beauty, thoughtful service, and intimate atmosphere make it a unique experience. This Post Ranch Inn Big Sur Review reflects my unforgettable stay, blending breathtaking views, indulgent amenities, and romantic serenity.
