During my recent stay at the San Francisco Ritz-Carlton, I experienced timeless luxury unveiled, a testament to the exquisite service that the Ritz-Carlton brand is known for. My review of The Ritz Carlton San Francisco reflects this hotel’s classic charm, bringing back memories of my experiences from 15 years ago when every detail was catered to with utmost care. In a time when many Ritz properties seem to have lost this touch, the San Francisco location shines brightly as a beacon of hospitality.
Experience Upon Arrival
As we arrived, gentlemen in top hats and tailored suits greeted us, opening the double doors to the stunning lobby. The lobby was adorned with vibrant floral arrangements, instantly setting a luxurious tone for our stay. The friendly staff at the reception welcomed us warmly and made me feel special by upgrading us to a suite. A delightful touch was the fortune cookies available in the lobby, adding a nice treat to the experience.
A Glimpse of History
Although our stay was brief, it was steeped in the rich history of the building, which is set within a 1909 Neoclassical landmark in the prestigious Nob Hill neighborhood, right next to Union Square. The hotel didn’t officially open as The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco until April 8, 1991, developed by Nisso Development Co. in collaboration with Waverly Associates, Inc. Today, TheRitz-Carlton, San Francisco is an integral part of the beloved City by the Bay, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the local culture.
Comfort and Amenities
The bed and linens met the high standards expected from a Ritz-Carlton. To my surprise, a thoughtful birthday gift of two cupcakes and a bottle of champagne awaited us, showcasing the hotel’s commitment to personal touches.
The suite’s decor, while beautiful, felt slightly dated. Unfortunately, the views of the city were limited due to surrounding buildings; however, the unparalleled service more than compensated for this.

Suite Tour
While the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco might feel more like a business hotel, it truly excels in providing exceptional service and boasts a fantastic location, making it a great choice for any traveler.
The club level, although showing its age with dated decor, offered excellent service, with staff providing recommendations for the best restaurants and activities in the city. While there isn’t a spa on-site, guests can arrange for a masseuse to come to their room, and there is a well-equipped gym available. Although the hotel lacks a pool, the attentive staff and overall experience more than make up for it.
Dining Highlights and Local Adventures
Before our arrival, the concierge recommended a fantastic steak restaurant, Harris’ Restaurant -The San Francisco Steakhouse. I highly suggest Harris’ Restaurant for anyone visiting the area. During our stay, I also learned about an exciting new experience in San Francisco called Waymo. Waymo is an AI-driven car service that you absolutely must try.

The hotel is conveniently located just a block from Chinatown, offering easy access to the trolley. It’s also just a short car ride—about 20 minutes—from iconic spots like Fisherman’s Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge. Although we planned a private sailing tour with Captain Marco, it was unfortunately canceled due to him not feeling well. While we didn’t visit Alcatraz this time, it’s a must-see for first-timers in San Francisco.
Our visit in September coincided with one of the warmer months for San Francisco, yet the weather was a cool 68 degrees and overcast—so warm clothing is essential.
We took a scenic ferry ride to Sausalito, a picturesque town nestled along the waterfront, offering stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Known for its delightful restaurants and quaint boutiques, Sausalito exudes a charming, laid-back atmosphere that invites leisurely exploration and indulging in the local culinary scene.

I wholeheartedly recommend the San Francisco Ritz-Carlton if you’re seeking amazing service in a beautiful hotel.
