If you are planning a romantic night in San Antonio, this is one to put at the top of your list.
While we were staying at Mokara Hotel & Spa, we decided to walk to Dean’s Steak & Seafood for dinner. The restaurant is located in downtown San Antonio near the River Walk, and the walk from the hotel was beautiful. It took us about 15 minutes. We followed the river before heading through the city streets, and even on a chilly night, it felt like the perfect way to start the night.
There is something about walking to dinner that makes the evening feel more intentional.
The Setting
Dean’s is an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant set inside a restored 19th century schoolhouse. From the moment you walk in, it feels like stepping into a refined piece of San Antonio history.
The atmosphere is warm, intimate, and quietly luxurious without being flashy. It does not try too hard. It just feels elegant.
One of the things I loved most about the space is the seating. They have standard tables, but the booths are what make it special. They are plush, private, and feel incredibly luxurious. If you are going for a romantic dinner or celebrating something important, request a booth. It completely elevates the experience.

The Courtyard & The Study at Deans
It was too cold for us to sit outside, but the courtyard is one of the main highlights of the restaurant. Tucked away under century old live oak trees, it feels romantic before you even sit down. The trees are wrapped in soft lights, candlelit tables are scattered throughout, and the historic limestone walls give the entire space so much character. It is intimate and charming without feeling staged. I can easily picture this being the setting for an anniversary dinner or a proposal.
The Study is reservation only and is open Thursday from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 5:00 pm to midnight. If you are planning your evening, I would absolutely consider starting or ending the night there. It feels like the educated choice for unwinding in a setting that is both elevated and inviting.
The Food
Everything we ordered melted in your mouth. Truly. The quality was outstanding, and every bite felt thoughtful and well prepared. Nothing felt rushed or overly complicated. It was classic steakhouse food done exceptionally well.
You can see exactly what we had for dinner in the photos, but I can confidently say this is one of the best meals I have had in a long time.

The Service
The only reason I cannot give Dean’s a full 10 out of 10 is because the service was not quite up to par. That part was disappointing, especially because everything else was so incredible.
When you are in a setting that feels this special, you expect the service to match. The service was cordial, though the rythm of the evening felt gently interuptted. And when the food and atmosphere are this strong, you notice that difference.
Because of that, I would rate it a 6 out of 10.
Final Thoughts
That said, I would absolutely give this restaurant a second chance. The atmosphere, the food, and the overall experience were too good not to.
If you are staying at Mokara and want a romantic dinner within walking distance, Dean’s Steak & Seafood is a must. The short walk along the River Walk, the historic setting, the luxurious booths, and the unforgettable food all come together to create a night that feels special.
It is elegant. It is intimate. And it feels like the kind of place you will remember long after your trip is over.
