One of the biggest reasons I booked another sailing on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Ilma was because I wanted to experience the trip differently this time. During my Mediterranean itinerary, almost every excursion we booked was private. We had drivers waiting at the bottom of the yacht stairs, flexible schedules, and a much more intimate experience in every port. For this Caribbean itinerary, I decided to mix things up and try a few group excursions instead. I assumed that because they were booked through Ritz-Carlton, they would still feel elevated and luxurious. I quickly realized that was not necessarily the case.
The Arrival Experience Matters
Normally, I always have Ritz-Carlton arrange transportation from the airport directly to the yacht. This time, I decided not to because I thought getting there ourselves would be simple enough. Instead, we spent almost 30 minutes trying to figure out which port the yacht was docked at because I did not realize there are two major cruise ports in Puerto Rico. We were standing outside in the heat pulling up emails, checking addresses, and trying to figure out where we were supposed to go.
It completely changed the tone of arrival day. One thing Ritz-Carlton does extremely well is making the experience feel seamless from the second you land. Having a driver waiting for you removes all stress and immediately makes the trip feel luxurious. After this experience, I would absolutely recommend booking the Ritz transportation service every single time.
Why I Decided to Try Group Excursions
Since I had already been to many of the ports on this itinerary, I thought trying a group excursion could be fun and different from my previous sailings. I figured that anything organized through Ritz-Carlton would still feel upscale, even in a group setting. After experiencing private tours in the Mediterranean, though, I quickly realized how spoiled we had become.
Private tours allow you to move at your own pace, customize your schedule, and spend more time actually enjoying the destination instead of coordinating around a larger group. That difference became obvious almost immediately during the first excursion.
The Virgin Gorda Baths Excursion
For the Virgin Gorda Baths excursion, everyone gathered in the main living room onboard before heading off the yacht together. There were around 15 people total, and we boarded an open-air bus that took us to the Baths.
The Baths themselves were beautiful, but because we tend to move quickly, we finished the experience while most of the group was only halfway through. Instead of heading back whenever we were ready, we would have had to wait around for probably another hour before the transportation returned to the yacht. We ended up finding another ride back early so we could avoid wasting so much time waiting.
That was the moment I realized one of the biggest downsides of group excursions. Your entire day revolves around the pace of everyone else instead of your own.

The Sail Boat Excursion That Missed Expectations

The sail boat excursion was the experience that completely changed my opinion on group tours. Before booking it, I imagined something relaxing and scenic. I thought we would spend the day sailing through the Caribbean with beautiful views, ocean breeze, and a luxury atmosphere. The reality was very different.
The first sign should have been the transportation. We boarded an older van with around 15 other guests, and the seats literally had holes in them. The driver was also extremely aggressive and fast while driving, which did not exactly feel luxurious. When we arrived at the St. Thomas Yacht Club, the excursion started with a classroom-style lesson explaining every part of a sail boat. Then we were placed onto small sail boats where guests actually had to operate the boats themselves. We had to help put up the sails and take turns steering the boat with other guests.
This was not the relaxing sailing experience I had imagined at all. Instead of sitting back and enjoying the views of the Caribbean, it felt more like a beginner sailing class. Honestly, everyone on the excursion seemed disappointed because the experience was completely different from what most people probably expected when booking it.
It taught me a big lesson about excursions. Always read the full description carefully because sometimes the title and photos can make the experience sound very different from what it actually is.

Why Private Tours Are Worth It
After experiencing both private and group excursions on Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection itineraries, I can confidently say that private tours are worth the extra cost.
During my Mediterranean sailing, private touring felt effortless. A luxury car and driver waited for us directly outside the yacht, we moved on our own schedule, you have your own private photographer, and we were able to experience so much more throughout the day. Everything felt calmer, more intimate, and far more aligned with the overall Ritz-Carlton experience.

Group tours may work for travelers who enjoy meeting people or want a lower-cost option, but if you are booking a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection cruise specifically for luxury, I would strongly recommend private excursions whenever possible.
Once you experience the convenience, comfort, flexibility, and personalization of private touring, it is very hard to go back. After trying both, I personally would never book another group tour on a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection sailing again.
