For me, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has never just been about travel, it’s about a feeling. A sense of calm, care, and quiet luxury that stays with you long after you leave. After our unforgettable voyage on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Luminara, I truly believed we had discovered the most perfect way to see the world.
So when we booked our second sailing on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Ilma, a shorter Caribbean itinerary, my expectations were not just high, they were deeply personal. I wasn’t just hoping for another beautiful trip, I was hoping to feel that same magic again.
San Juan Cruise Embarkation: What to Expect Before Boarding Ilma
Our journey began in San Juan, and from the very first moment, I could tell this experience would be different. We arrived at the port around 1:00 p.m., expecting the same seamless, almost dreamlike boarding process we had experienced before. This time, however, there were lines, crowds, and a noticeable wait. There was no immediate luggage assistance, and the check-in process felt more like a traditional cruise terminal than the effortless arrival I had come to associate with The Ritz-Carlton. It wasn’t bad, just different, and that difference stood out.
Before stepping onboard, it’s helpful to understand the rhythm of this sailing. Our voyage departed from San Juan and followed a route that felt both classic and intentionally paced:

Ilma Caribbean Itinerary (San Juan Round-Trip):
- Day 1: San Juan, Puerto Rico (Departure at 6:00 PM)
- Day 2: Virgin Gorda (08:00 AM – 07:00 PM)
- Day 3: Gustavia, St. Barths (08:00 AM – 09:00 PM)
- Day 4: Marigot, St. Martin (08:00 AM – 07:00 PM)
- Day 5: St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (07:00 AM – 06:00 PM)
- Day 6: Return to San Juan
Once we cleared security, everything began to shift back into that familiar rhythm. We were warmly greeted and escorted onboard, where our suite ambassador welcomed us and guided us through the yacht and into our suite, and just like that, the outside world faded away.
Inside Ilma: A Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Ship Tour and First Impressions
Stepping onto Ilma still delivers that unmistakable feeling. It does not feel like boarding a cruise, it feels like arriving somewhere private and intentional. The Living Room, the heart of the yacht, welcomed us with cocktails and a quiet buzz of anticipation, where guests sat with a mix of excitement and curiosity about what was to come.
By the time we reached our suite around 2:00 p.m., I felt that familiar exhale. The design closely mirrors Luminara, modern, coastal, and deeply calming, with every suite featuring a private terrace that reinforces that residential, oceanfront feel. With just 448 guests and 224 suites, the yacht still feels intimate and refined, although this time it carried a slightly fuller energy that I noticed more than I expected.
Mid-Terrace Suite Review on Ilma
We booked the Mid Terrace Suite on Level 6 again, and it is a choice I would make every time. The larger balcony alone makes it worth it, with enough space for a lounger, table, and 2 chairs, creating a true extension of the room rather than just a small outdoor area. The mid-ship location also adds a sense of stability and convenience, making it one of the most comfortable spots onboard.
Walking into the room felt familiar in the best way. Soft lighting, clean lines, and the ocean stretching endlessly beyond the glass immediately create a sense of calm. It does not feel like a cruise cabin, it feels like a beautifully designed residence at sea, where every detail has been thoughtfully considered.

Atmosphere Onboard Ilma: What the Luxury Yacht Experience Feels Like
The overall atmosphere onboard Ilma leans quiet, polished, and deeply relaxed. It is not a yacht designed for high-energy entertainment or constant activity, but rather one built for slowing down and settling into the experience. Compared to Luminara, there were subtle differences that stood out. Service, while still warm and attentive, felt slightly slower at times, and the shared spaces felt more occupied, especially during sea days.
The social dynamic shifted as well. On Luminara, we formed deeper connections with the crew, while on Ilma, we found ourselves connecting more with fellow guests. It created a different kind of experience, one that felt more social in a guest-to-guest way, yet still aligned with the calm and refined energy of the yacht.

What Ilma Is Missing Compared to Luminara
As beautiful as Ilma is, there were a few standout elements from Luminara that I truly missed. The Art Bar was one of them, a hidden indoor-outdoor lounge that felt incredibly private and serene, the kind of place where you could lose track of time without realizing it. I also missed the hot tubs on Deck 10, positioned perfectly with panoramic ocean views, and the evenings at Mistral Bar during sail-away.
There was something about those moments, watching the sun set as the yacht quietly left port, dinner in front of you and the ocean stretching endlessly around you, that felt almost cinematic. Those are the details that stay with you long after the trip ends.
Ilma Dining Guide: Best Restaurants and What to Skip
Dining onboard Ilma remains a highlight, but it is something you need to plan for early. Making reservations as soon as you board is essential if you want to experience the best of what the yacht offers.
Our absolute favorite was Memori, a high-end Japanese and Pan-Asian restaurant that quickly became a favorite among guests. The food, service, and atmosphere all felt elevated and intentional. For lunch, we kept returning to the Beach House, an open-air space near the pool that perfectly complements the Caribbean setting with lighter dishes like ceviche and grilled seafood.
Mistral stood out as one of our favorite dinners, offering Mediterranean flavors and a beautiful indoor-outdoor setting that makes it ideal for sunset. While the main dining room, Tides, was consistent and polished, it did not stand out in the same way, and although Seta offers a more formal fine dining experience for an additional charge, we chose not to try it on this trip.
Activities, Marina Days, and What to Do Onboard Ilma
The Caribbean itinerary brought a different pace to life onboard. More guests chose to stay on the yacht during the day, which made pool areas feel more crowded and seating slightly harder to find. Unlike our Luminara sailing, there were no creative classes like jewelry making, flower arranging, or sip-and-draw sessions.
One of the most unique features remains the marina platform, where the yacht transforms into a private ocean playground while anchored. Guests can paddleboard, kayak, snorkel, or simply float in the water while music plays and drinks are brought to them. It is beautifully executed and incredibly relaxing, though for me, it felt more like a one-time experience rather than something I would revisit throughout the trip.

Is Ilma Worth It? Final Thoughts on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Experience
This sailing felt different in ways I did not fully expect. After Luminara, I came in with a certain emotional expectation, a feeling I wanted to recreate. While Ilma delivered on luxury, design, and overall experience, it did not resonate in quite the same way.
Ilma is still, without question, a beautiful yacht. The design is stunning, the suites are exceptional, and the experience is undeniably luxurious. But when you have experienced something truly extraordinary, your perspective shifts. If this had been my first sailing with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, I would have been completely swept away.
Luxury: 10/10
Service: 8/10
Passion: 8/10
And maybe that is part of the beauty of it. Because sometimes travel is not about recreating the same feeling, it is about discovering a new one.
