Sailing with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is unlike any other cruise experience. It is intimate, polished, and effortlessly luxurious, but it also has some unique details. These are the kinds of details you only learn once you have been onboard. Whether you are planning your first voyage or simply curious about what makes this luxury cruise line special, here are my personal tips and lessons learned from our time aboard the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Luminara.
1. Suite Upgrades: Here’s What to Expect
On The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, suite upgrades are not given out for seniority, loyalty status, or special occasions. If you want an upgrade, you will need to pay for it.
I spent two hours waiting to speak with Sebastian to discuss an upgrade, only to find out there were no free upgrades available. Save yourself the time and enjoy the suite you reserved. They are all beautifully appointed and spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies that make every room feel indulgent.
2. Luggage Storage Made Simple
The suite design is incredibly smart, but if you are wondering where your luggage goes, do not worry. The bed lifts up to allow for storage underneath, or you can ask your suite attendant to store it away for you. Either option keeps your space tidy and leaves you with more room to enjoy the view.
3. Personalize Your Suite Before You Arrive
One of the most underrated perks of sailing with Ritz-Carlton is how personalized your experience can be if you ask ahead of time.
If I am booking your voyage for you as your personal travel professional, or if you are working directly with a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection representative, let them know your preferences before boarding.
Do you love a particular snack or sparkling water brand? Prefer fresh flowers or champagne waiting in your suite? The team can prepare all of this in advance. It is a small detail that makes your arrival feel extra special and deeply personal, exactly what you would expect from The Ritz-Carlton.
4. Consider Staying on Deck 6 for a Larger Balcony
If you can, book a suite on Deck 6. The balconies on this level are noticeably larger, giving you enough space for a full lounge chair instead of just two chairs and a small table.
Having that extra outdoor space completely transforms the experience. Morning coffee feels more serene, and sunset sailaways are even more magical when you can recline and take it all in.
5. Plan Excursions in Advance
You will receive access to your personal Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection portal before your voyage. The moment it opens, make your excursion reservations.
The curated experiences are incredible, private, well-organized tours, and tailored to the destination, but they fill up fast. Some sell out within days of becoming available.
If you wait until you are onboard, you will likely miss out on the most popular ones.
6. Enjoy an Effortlessly All-Inclusive Experience
One of the most refreshing aspects of this cruise is how effortless it feels once you are onboard.
Your fare includes:
- All drinks, including wine, cocktails, and specialty coffees
- All gratuities
- 24-hour in-suite dining
It is truly all-inclusive in the best way possible. You can order a cappuccino, a glass of champagne, or a midnight snack without ever signing a bill.
7. Secure Your Dining Reservations Early
While you technically do not need to make reservations in advance, I still recommend doing so as soon as you arrive. The main dining venues, Haesu, Beach House, Seta Su, and Mistral, can get busy, especially on certain nights.
And speaking of dining, do not miss dinner at Mistral Bar when leaving a port. Watching the lights of the city fade as you sail away, paired with a beautiful meal and ocean breeze, is one of the most romantic experiences you can have onboard. Mistral is only open a few nights per voyage, so plan accordingly.
8. Select an Itinerary That Includes Sea Days
If you love exploring new destinations, you might be tempted to pick an itinerary packed with stops, but do not underestimate how wonderful the yacht itself is.
I found myself feeling guilty that I did not have more time to enjoy the ship because I was always off exploring ports. The pools, the spa, the lounges, and the calm of the open sea are all part of the magic.
If I could do it again, I would choose sailing with at least one or two full days at sea just to relax onboard.
9. Arrive Early to Settle In
Embarkation day is smooth, but the earlier you arrive, the better. Guests can usually check in around 12:30 p.m., and I highly recommend doing so.
Arriving early gives you time to:
- Familiarize yourself with the yacht
- Meet your personal concierge
- Make your dining reservations
- Set up the yacht’s mobile app
- Explore your suite and learn how to control lighting, curtains, and entertainment
It makes the first day much more enjoyable and relaxed.
10. A Special Perk for Platinum Marriott Bonvoy Members
If you are a Platinum Marriott Bonvoy member, you will enjoy a wonderful perk: complimentary pressing service when you arrive. The staff will press all of your clothes so everything is perfectly wrinkle-free for the voyage ahead.
It is a subtle but thoughtful touch that aligns perfectly with The Ritz-Carlton standard of service.
11. Bring Your Passport and Matching Card When Shopping in Port
When you shop in port and want to take advantage of tax-free purchases, make sure to bring your passport and the credit card that matches your name. You will need both to qualify for duty-free savings.
12. Choose Local Currency for a Better Exchange Rate
When using your credit card internationally, you may be asked whether you would like to be charged in your home currency or the local one. Always choose the local currency.
Doing so typically gives you a better exchange rate, saving you money on every purchase, especially in popular ports like Barcelona, Rome, or Nice.
13. Anticipate a Refined and Relaxed Atmosphere
The typical age range onboard is primarily guests in their 50s and up, creating a refined and relaxed environment. Travelers are social, well-traveled, and appreciate the finer details, from attentive service to the understated luxury of the yacht’s design.
If you are looking for a calm, elevated cruise atmosphere rather than a party scene, you will feel right at home.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection delivers the kind of travel experience that blends the best of yachting and resort living. Every detail, from the onboard staff to the suite finishes, feels intentional and polished.
My best advice is to embrace the slower pace, make the most of your time onboard, and allow the service team to pamper you.
It is more than a cruise. It is a floating Ritz-Carlton, where every sunrise feels like a fresh start and every evening ends with champagne and sea views.
